NB Summer Camp 2018
It has been 2 years since we conducted our last Summer Camp, and we can feel the excitement of the school children to attend this year's event. The aim of summer camp is towards creating a healthier New Barili by popularizing preventive measures, organizing fun awareness programs on various issues of health and hygiene to young children. Team NB targets the young children and youth in this awareness program because, children are the best medium to carry the message to their parents, family and other community members. At the same time they will be exposed to health programs and aware of the consequences of unhealthy living, how to prevent it and how to promote good health at an early age. It was FULL OF FUN AND LEARNINGS!

New Barili goes full-on organic as Team NB launched the Organic Farming Facility last May 31, 2018, which showcased the newly renovated building that now houses the Organic Concoctions and the barangay Vermicomposting Facility.
The event was attended by no less than our eager New Barili farmers, supportive Barangay Officials and partners from the Jose Rizal Memorial State University Tampilisan Campus Department of Extension Services, represented by Mr. Mario Layan, Mr. Noel Baylon, and Mr. Avelino Lozada. This project aims to not only encourage segregation and repurposing of farm wastes but also aims to promote healthier food options in the by encouraging sustainable organic farming and produce. DON’T PANIC, IT’S ORGANIC! 🌿 To ensure excellence in our health teachings to New Barili and to fortify our in-community “Organic Hub”, we, along with other community members underwent thorough training and studying and survived rigorous assessment to attain the National Certification II for Organic Agriculture Production.
Our Organic Hub consists of an Organic Farming Facility (for vermicomposting and concoction production), an Organic Community Garden and a lovely little Greenhouse for effective planting. Each of these are geographically situated in the heart of the community. With this Organic Hub we aim to address the nutrition status of children, provide effective fertilizers to the farmers at almost zero cost, encourage composting, provide a model organic facility for every household in New Barili and to boost livelihood by selling the vermicompost and increasing the quality of produce. New Barili deserves only the best! FUN TRIVIA: The certificates are printed on a very distinct paper from the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas. I LOVE YOU TOO! ❤️ To reciprocate the love New Barili has given us, a grand-scale medical mission and operation tuli was held for our beloved Barileans! Our love language being acts of service, we were able to cater close to a hundred individuals for the medical consultation, operation tuli, immunization (for children) and PCV vaccines (for our sweet seniors).
LOVE IS KIND. With the support of our Municipal Heath Officer Dr. Carmel Mathilda Ladeza, who have been championing our projects for the past 4 years, we were able to provide an equipped pharmacy for the dispensation of medicine, RBS, vaccines and surgical tools for the mission. LOVE KNOWS NO DISTANCE. Doctors drove all the way from different corners of the peninsula to offer their Magis medical services for the community. Dr. Juvylisa Asentista from Liloy, Atenean doctors Dr. Maryam Majid from Titay, Dr. Patricia Gail Escober from Ipil, Charlie Hernandez and Jessa Mayet Sumatra from Zamboanga City, and Krizzie Dejecacion and Lovely Villar from Lawaan. LOVE IS PATIENT. The efficient staff of the Tampilisan Rural Health Unit, endured the warmth and wave of the day to serve the people in New Barili. The genuine care of Maam Daisy Ochotorena, Maam Betsy Pearl Bulaqueña, Maam Gemma Larato, Miss Maricris Lagare, Miss Lucia Bago, Miss Lizelle Ejan, Miss Rose Faeldin, Sir Earvin Bato and Miss Frejah Timonera. LOVE IS CARING. The turn-out of the event is a reflection of the leadership shown by the New Barili Barangay Council. From Hon. Melecia Pardo to every single one of the seven Barangay Councillors, who, for 4 years, have never been short of care for their community. LOVE IS SWEET. And the recipient of our devoted love, our dearest sweet New Barili. You deserve only the best! YOU RAN, WE REHABILITATED! To every one who ran with us during the #TampiHeartRun2018, this is where your humble 20 pesos went. The effective rehabilitation of the New Barili Barangay Health Station. Now, brighter and couple- & mother-friendlier! We also launched the Barili Health Map strategically situated inside our BHS where we can operatively locate hypertensives, pregnant mothers, family planning users, underweight children, and houses still in need of toilet facilities and waste segregation. This installation was designed to help health workers provide ultra-efficient health services to the individuals and households in New Barili. The newly rehabilitated BHS also features specific service corners for children, pregnant mothers, family planning users, hypertensives and general health services. The rehabilitation would not be possible without the active community involvement of New Barili. They voluntarily gave their time and services in building the council-funded comfort room. They donated curtains and plants while our BHWs kept the structure tidy. The Tampilisan Rural Health Unit under Dr. Carmel Mathilda Ladeza has continuously supplied the medications and our Nurse Miss Maricris Lagare, our midwife Miss Daisy Ochotorena and our public health nurse Miss Betsy Bulaqueña have ceaselessly provided the much needed health services. To everyone who ran with us and are still running with us, THANK YOU. #CommunityInvolvement New Barili in coordination with the Rural Health Unit of Tampilisan celebrates "WORLD IMMUNIZATION WEEK"! Since the advent of vaccination, infant mortaliy rate, among others, have gone down by a significant rate. Vaccinations save over 2-3 million lives every year around the world. #VaccinesWork 💉👍🏻 🌎
Mothers from New Barili along with their children came to receive various vaccines included in the EPI program of the DOH. At the same time, additional NB nutricard were given to monitor the weight of all children 5 years and below. Also recognizing the inclusion of EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING in the 1st 1000 DAYS of a child, TEAM NB continued the tracking of exclusively breastfeeding mothers in the community. This can be realized and made sustainable thanks to the tireless effort of the Rural Health Unit, our very energetic NDP Ma’am Mary Cris Lagare and forever active BHWs Ma’am Maricel and Ma’am Alice. This #WorldImmunizationWeek, help us spread the word: #VaccinesWork! 💉👍🏻 🌎 PS: Photos taken and posted with permission. Clean and Green is the way to go. Last March 2018, Team NB in partnership with the barangay council and with the support of the residents of New Barili, launched the “Sack-for-Junk Project” where a total of 600 sacks were distributed to 200 households in the barangay with the aim of promoting waste segregation at source. 3 sacks labeled Residuals, Recyclables and Special Waste were given to each household along with flyers on waste segregation.
Today, after house-to-house survey we are humbled to see that the residents of New Barili have put to good use what we all have worked for. Here are some of the pictures taken during the survey. Together we can make things happen and together we will be working for a cleaner and healthier New Barili. SECOND ROUND! 🥊 Fighting malnutrition one seed at a time! Improving accessibility of children to healthy and nutritious food through assisting families in cultivating and planting their very own bountiful garden with complete food groups. The community headed by the parent leaders are actively cultivating the community garden. This is the second round of planting seeds after the initial but multiple harvests that provided raw ingredients in the feeding of children in the daycare center and for every willing household in New Barili. The harvest was so bountiful that the extra organic vegetables were sold to the local market by the community members. A garden headed, planted, tended, and harvested by the community! Talk about major community involvement! How encouraging to witness such a self-reliant New Barili! #CommunityInvolvement #SelfReliantNewBarili #Organic
A A lecture and taining seminar was held last March 14, 21, and 23 at the New Barili, Basketball Court. This is in collaboration with the Jose Rizal Memorial State University Tampilisan Campus to teach residents of New Barili on how to turn farm refuse to organic fertilizers and insecticides.
Introducing the “Limpyong Bata” Wash Station! This communal wash area encourages group hand washing amongst the students of the Day Care Center and the New Barili Elementary School. It is not only fun and engaging, but it also aims to increase awareness and remind school children to perform tooth brushing and hand washing at critical times. With its launching, distribution of personal hygiene kits, demonstration and return demonstration of hand washing and tooth brushing were also done. Of course, this would not have been possible without the help of the parents who worked hand in hand with us in constructing the Limpyong Bata Wash Station.
Nature sure is amazing! Here is the progress of the Garden NB in pictures-- from land prep, to requisition of seeds, to a tour in a model garden, to seed planting and finally to harvesting full grown organic vegetables. The residents harvested the vegetables for personal consumption and the mothers of the children daycare center even used the vegetables for the 120-day feeding program! Team NB proudly joins the efforts of the Department of Health, Water & Sanitation Program, and the World Bank to end OPEN DEFECATION by displaying these HD posters on TOILET SANITATION IN BISAYA DIALECT in strategic areas of the barangay as one of the five parts of the TOILET SANITATION INFORMATION CAMPAIGN under the "Bayanihan sa Palikuran" program of the team NB. For Health Promotion and Disease Prevention as the core of Community Medicine, the team strongly believes that one of the vital functions of being doctors in the community is ADVOCATING FOR HEALTH through information dissemination thus the creation of the "TOILET SANITATION INFORMATION CAMPAIGN". This aims to influence the members of the community to build their capacity to be the responsible residents that they can be and together, strive for a zero-open defecation barangay. This campaign also synergizes the efforts of all stakeholders, especially the barangay council who was able to procure and distribute water sealed toilet bowls from the office of the Provincial Governor last November 2016. Special thanks to the generous sponsors of our school ADZUSOM and to the Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine Community Department for supporting our cause to end open defecation.
Encouraging the community to increase physical activity to FIGHT HYPERTENSION through"Hataw sa NB", a weekly zumba session that aims to help promote physical activity in the community. It has now become a part of the saturday afternoon routine of the community. The residents gather at the Barangay Covered Court to ZUMBA their HEARTS out!

Improper solid waste management appears to be a perennial problem in most parts of the Philippines, that despite the existence of national legislations, R.A. 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act and P.D. 856 or the Sanitation Code of the Philippines. This is a cause of concern as improper solid waste management may result in an array of diseases that will add not only add to the physical stresses but also the financial stresses of the families that they affect. The community recognizes that one of the top 10 problems in the community is improper solid waste management. In fact, based on the survey conducted last 2015, 60.9% of households do not practice waste segregation, 76.7% use burning as the primary means of waste disposal and only 2.33% practice recycling, meaning most of the waste produced in the community are not properly sorted and disposed of, which also means that, more of waste produced in the community are incinerated which also has profound effect in the environment. Hence, the need to institute measures that will help the people of New Barili develop an eco-friendly attitude. The Team New Barili, in an effort to curb this problem, has implemented several activities which aim in increasing the knowledge of the residents of New Barili in proper waste segregation and recycling. To reinforce the segregation practices, the team handed out 3 labeled sacks per household along with a pamphlet that contains the types and categorization of the common wastes in the community. This should serve as receptacles for residuals, recyclables, and special/hazardous wastes. |
